Cafehopping in Johor Bahru

After the short food trail I had previously at Taman Sentosa, I had been looking forward to my next food adventure in Johor Bahru.

Cafes had been sprouting out almost everywhere in Johor over these past few years. Singaporean had also starting to move into Johor to do their cafe hopping.

Thanks to Jia Hui from FaithJoyHope and Hazel from HazelDiary for planning the cafe hopping session.

Most of the cafes are located at.

First Stop : The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen

The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen had recently open for business in May 2015. This is the second establishment from the team of Faculty of Caffeine! The founder created the cafe with  the     ”Bed and Breakfast” concept for people to enjoy good food and lodge while they are in Johor.

You can easily spot The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen from its white washed walls.

I liked their cafe slogan of “A Nook in the Cityscape to celebrate good food & For the wanderlust to rest between wanders”.

The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen has a contrasting interior and concept from Faculty of Caffeine. Instead of the dark, raw, industry concept, The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen goes for a white minimalist design.

The wooden tables and counter top along with the warm lighting giving the cafe a relaxing and cosy ambience. You can see the founder’s efforts in dressing up the cafe with the selection of flowers, magazines and small decorations. Every corner of the cafe is absolutely Instagram-worthy.

My favorite part of the cafe is at the long counter top along the full height window. Slowly slipping the fragrant coffee and enjoy the freshly make churros while doing people watching. As the light warm sun shine upon you, you can simply empty out your mind and focus on the delicious coffee and food. 人生一大享受 ~

In order to enjoy the above scenario, I will advise you to visit the cafe during the weekdays or early weekend morning before the crowd start streaming in.

To start off our morning, we order a breakfast platter and a cup of Rose Latte to go along.

I was attracted by the rich color combination of the scrambled egg, grilled tomatoes, spinach , sauteed mushrooms along with the chicken sausage, turkey ham and muesli bread. I love the fact that the breakfast as well balance with the varieties of proteins, veges and healthy carbo.

The light aroma of the latte with a subtle hint of rose goes perfectly with the breakfast platter.

Completing our breakfast with Fruits and Dips Churros. The Churros were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside with a light hint of cinnamon. Dipping them into their homemade dark chocolate ganache were too good to resist. You can also drip the fresh bananas and berries into the chocolate ganache too.

Kindly do take note that most cafes at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and Jalan Dhoby open at around 12pm to 1pm.

Since we are still early after The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen. We decided to stroll around to discover cafe which are open.

Second Stop: Table For Two²

Along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee Road, we spotted an small cafe, Table For Two² which was open. Behind those dark framed wooden door, the cafe had adopted to Old English style with their brick walls and decoration.

At the end of the cafe, you are able to spot the corner where the cafe owner display his collection of vintage items.  It was like a little museum in a cafe.

Table For Two² only serve brunch items which are on the menu before 12pm.  Main courses like their Fish & Chip, Chicken Leg etc are only available after 12pm.

We order an Egg Benedict since it was recommended and stated as a Must Try item. Instead of coffee, we decided on a cup of guava juice.

We was quite disappointed with the Egg Benedict as we felt that it was too salty and the taste was overpowering. The double cheddar cheese had cover the taste of the Hollandaise sauce taste as well as the other flavors from the ham , egg and bread.

The Egg Benedict was overdone too, the egg yolk did not flow when we cut open. For this, it our personal preference of having running egg yolk for our Egg Benedict.

The guava juice was in deed very refreshing and managed to tame down the heavy Egg Benedict.

Third Stop : IT Roo Cafe

IT Roo Cafe had been known for their chicken chop and had been highly rated online too.

IT Roo Cafe is one of the oldest established Hainanese restaurants in Johor Bahru.

No fancy concept or decoration, just a simple home styled cafe where you can dine in comfort.

However, the experience was not as comfortable. I was seated at the al fresco area, and was traumatized by a few stray cats. I did not really managed to slowly enjoy the food.

Since they are known for their chicken chop, we ordered both their black pepper and mushroom sauce chicken chop.

The chicken chop was served with soft yet crispy potato wedges and coleslaw.  The chicken meat was tender but I felt that is a bit dry.

They are very generous with their serving of sauces.

For the black pepper sauce will be good if it have more of the peppery and spice.

However, the mushroom sauce was great. The sauce was rich with the light mushroom taste. I will definitely recommend to try the Mushroom sauce Chicken Chop.

Fourth Stop : Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory

Hiap Joo Bakery is a stop that you cannot miss when you are cafe hopping at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a traditional bakery which I don’t think we can find them anymore in Singapore.

From the start of kneading of dough to end process of the baking of the breads and cakes are all done in the most traditional way.

Hiap Joo Bakery can be easily identify and found via the long queue of people waiting to make their purchases.

Hiap Joo’s breads and cakes are still baked using wood fire. If you have the chance, you will be able to see the staff pushing trays of freshly knead bread into the oven.

They sell several of different flavor of handmade bread ranging from sweets to savory.

The star product of Hiap Joo Bakery is their Banana Cake. Almost every customer who walk in to Hiap Joo Bakery will be out with their Banana Cake.

The banana cake was surprisingly very light, fluffy and moist with the natural fragrance of the banana. I am definitely going back for their banana cake.

Fifth Stop: EH HE Gallery & Ink Brew Cafe

Situated next to Hap Joo Bakery, you will spot EH HE Gallery & Ink Brew Cafe. Combining art with cafe was an interesting and pretty new concept in the cafe scene.

We are welcome by two paper doll at the entrance of the gallery.

As we moved up to the second floor, we are greeted by recording of the Chinese opera and music.

Currently, they are showcasing the traditional Chinese opera scenes. You are able to find costumes, props and stage set up of the Chinese Opera. With the vintage raw walls of the shophouse, you seem to have travelled back to the era.

As we enter into the next part of the gallery, you get to see various interesting artworks from the various local artists.

Spending a small part of the afternoon soaking in these amazing art was indeed relaxing and enriching.

Do take note that current EH HE Cafe at the second level is currently going through renovation. For more information,do refer to Ink Brew‘s facebook page.

After spending almost 3 hours at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, we left for KSL City Mall.

We took a cab outside Maco Vintage Cafe to KSL and it cost us RM8 via meter. ( Do note that the cab fare should not be exceeding RM10 )

Sixth Stop : Oh! Ice Cream

A new addition to the F&B outlets of KSL City Mall, Oh! Ice Cream. I believe everyone are flocking to the store for their Instagram worthy Claypot Ice Cream, so are we.

For RM 28, you will get to choose 3 Ice Cream flavors and 2 Topping served in a small blue claypot with dry ice at the side.

Along with that you will also get a small waffles with whipped cream drizzled with chocolate sauce.

We felt the Ice cream was normal and nothing fantasy to talk about. However, the presentation was indeed Instagram worthy. Do pardon the out of focus photos, we are all rushing our photo taking before the dry ice effect was gone and the ice cream start melting.

Seventh Stop : Teck Sing

While we are making our way from KSL to our next cafe, we decided to stop by Teck Sing for some savoury food and a proper lunch. Teck Sing is a well known for its signature dish, Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken. Other then their paper wrapped chicken, you can also enjoy a delectable array of more than 70 Chinese cuisine at affordable price.

The chicken is wrapped in thick parchment paper. Once the paper was torn apart, the fragrance and aroma of the chicken as well as the herbal started gushing out. They uses kampong chicken for this dish therefore the meat was super tender and juicy. The meat and bone can be easily separated without any force. The gravy was heavenly as it was made up of the different kind of herbal as well as the essence of the chicken itself.

Over the years, I think they had increased the price of the Paper Wrapped Chicken to RM22. From what I read on various blogs like IeatIshootIpost, Johor Kaki, it used to be at RM 14 – RM19. However, I will still be back for it.

We ordered also Hotplate Beancurd to go along for our lunch. The moment the hotplate was placed down on our table, it was still bubbling and sizzling. The light and nice fragrant of the egg and egg beancurds made just drool and also realize that we had been eating a number of eggs since morning. The  Hotplate Beancurd was simply delicious. The beancurds were so soft and the savory sauce was great for our rice.

We completed our lunch with fried Kai Lan.

Eighth Stop: HeadMost Cafe

After our lunch at Teck Sing, we continue our trip to HeadMost Cafe.

HeadMost Cafe is located at Taman Pelangi. The area is quite ulu and you are required to take a cab in. Thanks to Hazel, we managed to located the cafe easily.

The minimalist loft concept with a combination of  street wear boutique and cafe.

According to our plan, we wanted to try their Shibuya Toast. However, we are super duple full as we had not stop eating since 10 am in the morning.

We decided to slow things down with their coffee.

I ordered  their Lychee Rose Latte which was recommended by Hazel.

The Lychee Rose Latte is slightly on the sweeter side, simply perfect for my sweet tooth. The touch of lychee and rose brought out the aroma of the coffee. I fell in love with it.

I will definitely be back for their Lychee Rose Latte and Shibuya toast very soon.

 Ninth Stop: Scoop Bar

Finally, we reach our last stop of our cafe hopping, Scoop Bar at Plaza Pelangi. Plaze Pelangi is about 8 – 10 minutes walk from HeadMost Cafe. Scoop Bar is located at the level 1 of the shopping plaza, near the atrium.  A small ice cream kiosk with a few seating at the side of the kiosk.

Their signature is the cookie sandwich ice cream. You are able to choose the cookie of your choice and pair them up with the ice cream of your choice too. They have a total of 12 different flavors of ice cream.

We bought two ice cream sandwich to share.  The one of the right was Red Velvet Cookie with Earl Grey Tea Ice Cream, the one of the left is Chocolate Smore Cookie with Durian Ice Cream.

We felt that the cookie was too thick and hard, we had difficulty biting into the ice cream sandwich as the ice cream will be squeeze out from the other end. We all had agreed that the Durian Ice Cream was good and yummy. Light fragrant of durian and not overly sweet.

In conclusion, we had a fun-filled and food-filled afternoon cafe hopping in Johor Bahru. We did not expect that we are able to eat and survive through all the stops.  The total damage cost for the whole cafe hopping including our transportation was about $90RM ( $32 SGD) each.

Looking forward to our next food adventure together.
