Most of the time when me and boyfriend travel to Johor Bahru, we will usually shop and dine in City Square.
We seldom venture out to other parts of Johor Bahru as we are not really familiar with Johor Bahru.
Thanks to boyfriend’s friend who planned and brought us for the short food trail at Taman Sentosa,Johor Bahru.
First Stop : Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh
Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh is one of the more popular Bak Kut Teh shop in Johor Bahru. You are able to find quite a number of Singaporeans and Malaysian Chinese dining in the shop.
Instead of having their kitchen at the back of the shop, the had it at the entrance to the shop. The slight herbal smell from the soup base linger in the air as you enter the shop.
Each of their order are prepare separately with the freshest ingredients.
We ordered two person portion of their Signature Bak Kut Teh and one small Sesame Oil Chicken.
You can ordered additional Add-On Ingredients to the Bak Kut Teh upon ordering or in between your meal.
We had additional 2 more servings of Bean Curd Skin, 1 serving of Enoki Mushroom. 3 serving of Pig Kidney and 2 bowl of you tiao.
Do note : each serving of Pig Kidney consist of 6 pieces.
We started our meal with Aiyu Jelly. Perfect for the hot and humid weather. The slight sourness from the lime juice and the sweetness from the Aiyu Jelly made it super refreshing.
We ate 2 bowl each.
Signature Bak Kut Teh for 2 person
The whole Bak Kut Teh’s clay pot was filled with ingredients to the brim. There are Button Mushroom, Enko Mushroom, Fish maw, Pacific Clams, Beancurd Skin, Meat ball, Ribs , Pig Liver, Pig Kidney and I think there other pig’s organs too.
I was expecting a Singapore flavor of peppery and spicy Bak Kut Teh’s soup. Surprisingly, the soup base does not have the peppery taste but a light herbal and sweetness. It was not salty at all. Even though, personally I prefer the peppery Bak Kut Teh’s soup. I cannot stop dipping the you tiao into the soup and drinking from it too.
I love the combination of all the different ingredients together even though I dont dare to eat pig organs. According to my friend, they serve the best pig kidney. The pig kidney was done perfectly. It does not have the organ smell and powdery texture. The pig kidney had the bouncy texture which a lot shops failed to achieve.
Out of all the ingredients, I like the Beancurd Skin, Enko Mushroom and of course the tender ribs.
Another must try from Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh was the Sesame Oil Chicken.
The sauce goes perfectly with the rice. The sauce was not too salty which I like about the dish. However, I felt it does not have much of the Sesame oil fragrant.
The chicken meats were tender and had absorbed all the essence of the sauce. It will be great if there more ginger. I am a fan of fried ginger.
We spent 98 ringgit ($37 SGD) for 3 person. I find the price was super reasonable as we ordered quite a fair bit of food.
I will definitely be back again for their Bak Kut Teh.

Second Stop : Heong Peah 马蹄酥
Just a few shop away on the left of Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh, you are able to find a display shelf selling Heong Peah ,BBQ Chicken Chai Siew Bao and others.
This display shelf is situated at the entrance of Tang Feng Bak Kut Teh. They do provide free tasting for their products before you buy them.
Not a huge fan of fried bao and was really full from our lunch. I tried their Heong Peah 马蹄酥 which is their best selling item.
The crust was crispy and flaky. You can taste the fragrant from the butter in your mouth. The malt inside was not too sweet and sticky. The whole combination was so good.
We bought 10 pieces of Heong Peah 马蹄酥 for $1.20 Ringgit each with free 1 pieces. According to the lady boss, the Heong Peah 马蹄酥 can be kept up to 3 months in air tight container.
Other then selling puffs, they have some durian’s products too.

Last stop : Loong Kee Dried Meat
Before heading for our massage session, we decided to drop by Loong Kee for some Bak Kwa. Loong Kee is located around 400m down from Shoon Huat Bak Kut Teh.
Loong Kee is one of the well know brand in Malaysia for bak kwa. They have a total of 14 outlets in Malaysia.
We tried the Loong Kee Gui Fei Bak Kwa. The fats was evenly distributed and was pretty tender.
I prefer the spicy one as it have the combination of both the sweetness and spicyness. You start to taste the spiciness but it ended with a slight sweetness from the bacon.
We bough 300g of the spicy Gui Fei Bak Kwa while my friend bought 500g each.
Other then Bak Kwa, they also sell other products like meat floss, cookies biscuits , mooncakes, snacks etc.

If you are heading for massage after dinning at this area. I don’t advise you to have your massage at Bangkok Spa even though it was one of the nearest massage parlor.
We had a pretty bad experience there. Instead of relaxing and enjoying the 180 minutes of Traditional Thai Maasage. We were hoping it to end soon.
Just to share a bit on my experience here.
I was with two guys, my boyfriend and our friend. Instead of asking whether do we need couples room or individual rooms, they assigned a room for the three of us. It become quite awkward for a moment as we need to change to the pajamas in the room. I am not sure is it normal to put 2 guys and 1 girl together in a room.
However, this is not the main thing. The Masseuses were not really skill in applying the force to the massage. I am feeling more pain then muscle relaxation. My whole arms when numb a few times. My lower back which had recovered from my muscle pain had become worst after the massage. My boyfriend’s leg cramp for two times due to the huge force applied on him.
We ended up having body ache today and my boyfriend having bruises on his legs too.
I will never have another massage session with them again. I seriously prefer Thai Odyssey even though it was abit more expensive.
